Indications of Azithromycin
Azithromycin is essentially used for the treatment of certain infections caused by bacteria. The drug could also be used for the treatment of several other conditions that are determined by your physician.
A macrolide antibiotic, Azithromycin works through slowing the growth, or also possibly killing sensitive bacteria through decreasing the production of the important proteins which are needed by the bacteria for survival.
Important Information of Azithromycin
Azithromycin should never be used if you have any history of allergic reactions to any ingredient found in Azithromycin or to any other macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin; and if you are taking pimozide. Make sure that you would be immediately contacting your physician or your health care provider if any of these things apply to you.
Also, there are a number of medical conditions which could possibly interact with Azithromycin. Make sure that you would be informing your pharmacist or doctor if you have a medical condition, particularly if the following apply to you: if you suspect you are or if you are pregnant; if you are planning of conceiving; if you are breastfeeding; if you have any allergies to any food, substance or medicine; if you are taking medicine, prescription or non-prescription, any dietary supplements or herbal preparation; if you have a liver or kidney problem or any abnormal heart rhythms.
There are also some drugs and medications which could interact with Azithromycin. Inform your health care provider of any medications that you are already taking, like the following: Nelfinavir, as it could increase the risk of the side effects of Azithromycin; Rifampin, as it could decrease the effectiveness of Azithromycin; anticoagulants like warfarin, disopydramide, digoxin, rifampin or pimozide, as Azithromycin could increase the risks for side effects of these drugs; Theophylline, as blood levels could temporarily go down after stopping Azithromycin.
Keep in mind that this is not a complete listing of the possible interactions that could happen. Make sure to ask your health care provider of any interactions that could happen with a medication that you are taking. Also check first before starting, stopping or changing the dose of a drug that you are taking.
Administration of Azithromycin
Azithromycin should only be used as directed by your physician. Also check the drug label for the correct instructions for dosage.
In order to clear up the infection that you have completely, be sure to take Azithromycin for the entire time that it has been prescribed, even when your conditions have already improved in a couple of days after taking the first dose.
If a dose of Azithromycin is missed, you would need to ensure that the missed dose is taken as soon as you can. But if the next dose is up, just skip the missed dose and you could just go back to the regular schedule of doses. You must never take two Azithromycin doses at the same time.
