Indications For Terbinafine
Terbinafine is generally recommended for the cure and treatment of a number of fungal infections particularly in the toenails and fingernails. Terbinafine is considered an antifungal agent. This drug works by eradicating sensitive fungi.
When Not to Use Terbinafine
This drug should not be used if: the patient is allergic to any substance found in Terbinafine or if the patient has had a history of severe liver or kidney problems.
Administration of Terbinafine
Use this drug as prescribed by your doctor. Verify information on the label for the right drug dosage instructions. This drug could be safely administered orally, with or with no food.
This drug is also normally taken for at least 6 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks depending on the condition of the patient. However, maximum benefits may not show for a few months following the discontinuing of the treatment, including the length of time required for the growth of a healthy nail.
Terbinafine should be taken during the full course of the treatment in order to clear up the infection completely. The patient could also continue taking this drug even after improvement in the conditions are seen, or even before the therapy is ended.
In the case of a missed dose of Terbinafine, it could be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is already the time for the next dose, the skipped dose can be overlooked altogether. Never combine two doses of Terbinafine at any time.
Important Information on the Safety of Terbinafine
It is recommended that the patient avoid consuming large amount of drinks that have caffeine such as tea, coffee, cola, cocoa, and chocolate while taking Terbinafine.
Certain lab examinations like liver function exams can be performed on a patient while taking Terbinafine. The said test can be used in monitoring the condition or checking on possible side effects. All labortatory aexaminations and doctor’s appointments must never be missed.
Terbinafine must be used cautiously in children, as the effectiveness and safety of this drug among children have yet to be established.
Also, Terbinafine should never be administered to a patient who is pregnant. Contact the doctor immediately if the patient suspects she is pregnant.
This drug can be found in breast milk and so, breastfeeding is prohibited to those taking this drug.
Side Effects of Terbinafine
While all medicines can cause serious side effects, many people have reported no or little side effects. Consult your doctor in case any of the following common side effects transpire or persist: indigestion, headache, diarrhea, taste changes.
Additionally, get medical help immediately in case any of the following severe side effects become apparent: severe allergic reactions such as hives, rash, itching, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, and tongue, symptoms of infection such as sore throat, chills, and fever, symptoms of liver problems like dark urine, pale stools, stomach pain, and persistent nausea.
Other symptoms would include unusual bleeding and bruising, changes in vision, red, peeling, blistered, or swollen skin.
