Indications of Clindamycin
Clindamycin is essentially used for the treatment of various serious infections that are caused by certain bacteria. This drug is not used as a treatment for meningitis. As a lincomycin antibiotic, Clindamycin works by killing sensitive bacteria through stopping the production of proteins which are needed by the bacteria for survival.
When Not To Use Clindamycin
Clindamycin should not be used if you: are allergic to any particular ingredient found in Clindamycin; are allergic to lincomycin; or have an antibiotic-associated colitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease or meningitis. If you have any of these conditions, make sure that you would be contacting your physician or your health care provider inmmediately.
Important Information About Clindamycin
Prior to the administration of Clindamycin, keep in mind that there are some medical conditions that could interact with this particular drug. Make sure that you would be informing your doctor of any medical conditions that you already have.
You would also need to let your doctor know if any if the following is applicable to you: if you know or suspect that you are pregnant; if you are planning of becoming pregnant; if you are breastfeeding; if you are already taking a prescription or a non-prescription medication, dietary supplement or herbal preparation; if you have any history of being allergic to any medication, food or substances; if you have any form of gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea or liver disease; if you have a history of being allergic to tartrazine.
Keep in mind that there are some drugs and medicines which could interact with Clindamycin. Inform your physician if you are taking any of these drugs and medications: non-depolarizing muscle relaxants like vecuronium or succinylcholine, as the side effects brough about by these drugs could increase due to the use of Clindamycin; Erythromycin, as it could decrease the effectiveness of Clindamycin.
This is not a complete list of the interactions that could possibly occur with these drugs’ combined use. Make sure that you would be asking your doctor or health care provider if any of the medications that you are taking could interact with Clindamycin. Also check with your physician before starting, stopping or changing the dosage of any medication you are taking.
Administration of Clindamycin
Clindamycin should only be used as your doctor has directed. Always check the drug label for the correct dosage instructions. Clindamycin could be taken on a full or empty stomach. It must be taken with a glass of water around 8 ounces or 240 milliliters. Clindamycin would work best if taken at around the same time everyday.
In order to make sure that your infection would be completely treated, Clindamycin must be taken for the whole period of treatment. So even if you feel better after a couple of days, it should still be continually taken.
If a dose of Clindamycin is missed, make sure that you would be taking it as soon as you remember to. However, it the next dose is almost up, you could just altogether skip the missed dose and just go back to the regular dose schedule that you had. Never take two Clindamycin doses at the same time.
