Indications of Biaxin

An antibiotic that is chemically related to erythromycin, Biaxin is generally used for the treatment of certain respiratory tract infections that are caused by bacteria. These infections would include: pneumonia; strep throat; tonsillitis; sinusitis; acute flare-ups from chronic bronchitis; and acute infections of the middle ear. Biaxin is also used for the treatment of skin infections. If this drug is combined with Prevacid or Prilosec, along with amoxicillin, it can effectively cure ulcers that are located near the stomach’s exit, or what are called duodenal ulcers that are caused by the H. pylori bacteria. Also, Biaxin may be prescribed to treat Mycobacterium avium infections in those individuals who have AIDS. Biaxin comes in suspension and tablet form, as well as in extended-release tablets or Biaxin XL. This extended-release form can only be used for bronchitis flare-ups and sinus inflammation.

Important Information About Biaxin

Similar to other antibiotics, Biaxin works most effectively when there is a consistent amount of the drug in the blood. To make sure that this amount is always kept consistent, no doses should be missed.

Administration of Biaxin

Biaxin tablets or suspension could be taken on a full or on an empty stomach. However, with Biaxin XL, it must always be consumed with food. Biaxin XL must not be crushed or chewed. For the Biaxin suspension, it must be shaken before taking each dose and should be consumed within 14 days. The medication must taken exactly as the doctor prescribed and it should be taken for the full course of treatment. In the case that a dose is missed, it should be taken as remembered. However, if the next dose is up, you could still take the missed dose an then the next one around 5 to 6 hours after. And then afterwards, the regular schedule must be followed.

Storage of Biaxin

Biaxin must always be stored at room temperature and placed in a sealed container, away from any light. The suspension should not be refrigerated.

Side Effects of Biaxin

Side effects could not be anticipated. If you experience any side effects and especially if they develop in intensity, you would need to inform your doctor immediately, as he or she would be the only one to determine whether or not it would be safe to continue taking Biaxin. Some of the more common side effects which could be experienced would include abnormal taste, abdominal pain, nausea, rashes, diarrhea and vomiting. The side effects experienced with Biaxin XL are milder compared to the side effects experienced with Biaxin. These side effects would include abnormal taste, nausea and diarrhea.

When Not To Use Biaxin

Biaxin should never be taken by anyone who has a history of having an allergic reaction to the drug. It should not be taken if you are sensitive to it or to erythromycin or any other similar antibiotic like Zithromax or Tao. Biaxin should also be avoided if you have an imbalance of water and minerals in your body or when you have some heart condition. The drug should be taken when using drugs like Orap, Propulsid, or Seldane.
