Indications of Levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel is essentially used for the prevention of pregnancy right after unprotected sexual intercourse or after a suspected birth control failure. This drug is a progestin pill and the method of how it works is not completely known. However, Levonorgestrel could effectively prevent pregnancy through the inhibition of ovulation, alteration of the transport of sperm or eggs so that fertilization could be prevented, or through the alteration of the uterus lining so that implantation could be prevented should fertilization occur.

Important Information about Levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel should not be used when: you have a history of having allergic reactions to an ingredient found in Levonorgestrel; you suspect or you are pregnant; you are taking rifampin, St. John’s wort or nevirapine; you are experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding; you have a history of bleeding in the brain or stroke; or if you have or suspect that you have breast cancer. You would need to contact your physician immediately if any of the mentioned conditions apply to you.

Administration of Levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel should only be used based on the directions of your physician. Also read the drug label thoroughly for the exact instructions for dosage. Levonorgestrel should be taken as soon as possible following unprotected sexual intercourse or suspected birth control failure. The drug’s first dose should be taken within 72 hours and the second dose 12 hours after taking the first. However, it is possible that your physician would be giving you different instructions for taking Levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel could be used at any time in the menstrual cycle. If you experience any vomiting within the next hour of taking either dose of Levonorgestrel, consult with your doctor if you would be needing to retake that dose.

Before taking Levonoregestrel, it is not necessary to have a physical exam anymore. However, if you are uncertain of your pregnancy status or your general health, it may be necessary to have a physical or pelvic exam. If a dose of Levonorgestrel is missed, it would be necessary to consult with your doctor immediately.
